‘IT GAZES BACK’ Photo Series

“and if you gaze for long into an abyss, the abyss gazes also into you”

Earlier this year we collaborated with Melbourne treasure Before March store for their new editorial ‘It Gazes Back’. Featuring clothing and jewellery from the Before March collection we were pleased to introduce furniture to the photo series. Inès, Lia and Nannai chairs from the Scannu collection by Pretziada shine as a stage for muse Yvette.

‘It Gazes Back’ was sprung from an internalisation of Nietzsche’s quote “and if you gaze for long into an abyss, the abyss gazes also into you” – a phrase oft interpreted as an ominous darkness with the power to overcome oneself. On pondering darkness; empty, noiseless spaces, we may just find some nourishment. Even still, some overwhelming sense of possibility. An empty stage to choreograph as we choose. A kind of meditation, a blank canvas. There is a fullness to the emptiness in that it acts as an invitation to a way forward and to become more deeply rooted in who we are.

And so here, an ode to permeable voids & temporal abysses.

The brands Before March work with adopt the principles of slow fashion and sustainability into their creative practices, whether it be through operating on a made to order model, exclusive use of natural fibres, using deadstock fabrics, oeko-tex certified textiles, recycled materials and beyond.

It is a philosophy complimentary to that of Pretziada and so collections combine in harmony.

Located in Northcote, Melbourne, Before March store’s intention is to invigorate our emotional connection with the items with which we clothe and adorn our bodies and spaces. Curator Melissa Mikletic, who runs the store’s in-house heart-led brand Sunshine Symbol, has always treated the space as an extension of her home.  A name that has given pause, to look back as well as strive ahead. Before March refers to the first seed of the business’ beginning, an homage to it’s first rough deadline.
