MILAN DESIGN WEEK 2022

The world’s leading furniture fair celebrates its 60th anniversary

After being cancelled in 2020 and run as a special and smaller scale event in 2021, both Salone del Mobile and Fuorisalone returned from 6th-12th of June 2022 bringing back an incredible energy and connection to Milan. This year was the 60th anniversary of the fair which included Salone Satellite at its 23rd edition where works by 600 young designers were presented under the ‘designing for our future selves’ theme. The city celebrated design with over 300 satellite events and installations across the main city districts and opened the door of new and remarkable locations which we were super excited to explore.

Origine was in Milan visiting its partners and their exhibitions among many other events which shaped this fantastic Design Week.

A curated selection of collectible objects and special commissions were displayed together with Paul Matter new Tryst lighting series in Nicolas Bellavance-Lecompte Milanese apartment. Monolith, Tango and Goddess lighting by Paul Matter also complemented this art-filled and sensational space. Discover more about the new Tryst here.

The new Cartagenas Reina Cocoon Chair was a hero! More to come!

LA MANUFACTURE: ‘871 days, 50 products, 17 designers and 1 single color’

Envisioning La Manufacture as a dynamic creative hub and construction site with a work in progress quality, Luca Nichetto retraced its design evolution selecting a single orange nuance, drawn from men at work’s orange vests. A new iterations of the firm’s iconic pieces engaging in a conversation with the sumptuous backdrop of 19th-century rooms of the Museo Poldi Pezzoli. View the collection, here.

PADIGLIONE BRERA - An evocative location for EXTO & NODUS

Padiglione Brera brought a new design destination to Fuorisalone. An initiative created by Andrea Galimberti, founder of Nodus & Exto, together with Alessio Monti, Italian artisan and artist, who chose the Main Cloister of the San Simpliciano complex in the heart of Brera, rich in history and one of the oldest churches in Milan. Here we also met Bahar Pourmoghadam&Marco Cattivelli from SCATTERED DISC OBJECTS who designed ‘Impassable’, a new collection of rugs for Nodus and Lorenzo Damiani, designer of the ever beautiful Overlooking for Exto. We adore the new totem version of Overlooking presented during this edition of Fuorisalone.

TOOY opened its new showroom in Corso Monforte, a lighting hub in the city centre. Here we were able to see a preview of the new Nastro System designed by Studio Pepe. Art and design converge: more Milan Design Week highlights

BARANZATE

‘The way to a new contemporary art of living’.

Belgium-based Zaventem Ateliers took over the 3000m2 of the former Necchi factory to showcase an innovative curation of collectible design from its community of 21 creators together with guests Galerie Philia, Everyday Gallery, Modern Shapes, Ben Storms, Atelier Serruys, Mircea Anghel and Bela Silva.

Studiopepe also presented ‘Temenos’, sanctuary in Greek, a collection of furniture and objects in collaboration with Galerie Philia, marking the studio’s debut into collectible design.

This Zaventem/Baranzate concept certainly inspired us and was an exceptional highlight of this Design Week!

ALCOVA

A curation of works by international established and emerging designers exploring materials, technology, sustainability, social practice and many other aspects of design. Valentina Ciuffi and Joseph Grima surpised again with Alcova fourth edition inside the abandoned ex-military hospital Baggio. A beautiful entryway made of nine types of onyx slabs welcomed us into one of the areas of the show where natural stone brand SolidNature made its Milan debut in collaboration with Sabine Marcelis and architecture studio OMA.

SPAZIO MAIOCCHI

A must-visit space. Originating from the convergence of visionary founding partners Carhartt WIP and Slam Jam, Spazio Maiocchi is a cross-disciplinary ideas aggregator, house to the studios and exhibition spaces of Kaleidoscope, one of Milan’s most widely recognised enterprises for contemporary art.

Giant puppets travelled from London for the launch of the Toogood x Carhartt WIP clothing collaboration. So fun!

Duo Formafantasma also reinterpreted Mario Bellini sofa Le Mura creating a comfortable setting with the sofa’s many configurations where visitors could relax while watching video projections on the theme of sitting by Cristiana Perrella.

Many more were the events that defined this exciting Design Week. Ciao Milan, see you in 2023!
