When briefed with the task of making a comfortable 3D-printed chair, Kooij answered with the RvR. A reverse chubby chair, the printed structure has been flattened to create a smooth, gently hugging surface. Composed of a single extruded shape, made from recycled plastic, the RvR is Kooij’s proposal of the plastic monoblock chair. Broad printed surfaces display tonal pigmentation, as colours gently shift through stacked lines.

A family of house-developed presses, robots, and extruders have directly shaped the identity of the collection. The limitations of these imperfect machines have gifted a visual language which envelops the function, tactility, and beloved oddness of the Kooij collection.

RvR is available in 5 colour options. Colour expression in the chairs is subject to exciting variation owing to the use of recycled materials and uncontrollable factors, including temperature and calcium content.

Select pieces have joined the permanent collections of the Stedelijk museum, MoMA New York, MoMA San Francisco, Vitra Design Museum, Design Museum London, and the National Museum in Oslo.
